When I first got to Rexburg for college, I found an
apartment complex called Pineview Apartments to live in. That first year was
full of great times. There were six of us who lived there: In addition to me,
we had Suzanne Perry and Christy Schafer, from the Salt Lake area, Bethany from Texas (after one semester she
sold her contract to her friend Carol Watts, from Texas, because she was
getting married), Lori Nelson from Florida, and Lisa Phillips, from Blackfoot,
Idaho. We were a diverse bunch, to say the least. Lori was waiting for a
missionary, and so was Christy. And both of them were die-hard determined that
they would not Dear John their men. (They both did, by the way). Lisa was a
student at the Beauty College there in Rexburg. Suzanne Perry loved to sing and
be completely silly and crazy, and she spent hours on her hair every morning.
There’s not a whole lot I remember from that year, but I do
remember Suz putting a pillow in her shirt (to be fat), and lip syncing to
Weird Al and Dr. Demento, into a spatula. Christy was in on that too. Yes,
nutty. We loved it!
I also remember that I worked snow removal on campus, and if
it snowed during the night they would call us in to shovel the sidewalks and
things before everyone needed to start walking to classes. Calls would usually
come at about 4:00 a.m. Boy, I do not envy Mark Jaynes, our supervisor, who had
to get up and call each of us, one by one, waking us up, to tell us to get out
of our warm beds and get to work to shovel. (I might also add that I had to
walk to work, through all the un-shoveled sidewalks. But somehow, I just loved
it. Looking back, I think I must have been crazy). Anyway, my roommate Suz was CRAZY about the
phone. She would sleep like a complete rock, and was impossible to wake up, but
if the phone rang she would grab it before half a ring was up, and answer it.
The catch was, she was still asleep! I would always set my alarm and check out
the window to see if Mark would be calling, and I would wait by the phone so I
could try and grab it before she got to the phone that was by her bed. But
there were a few times when she beat me to it, and Mark would say, “Suzanne?”
And she would say, “Yes?” And he would say, “You’ve got to come in to work.”
And she would tell him that no, she didn’t. And she was sleep talking, so she
had no clue, and she never ever remembered doing that. And I’d be on the other
phone, and I’d tell Mark I’d be there soon.
Silly, good times at college.
Lori Nelson, from Florida. We called her Lori from Flori.
For some reason I made a pig pinata. Why? Seriously, why?

Cindy Bowen was the Relief Society advisor in our ward. She was good friends with Aunt Dorothy, and we also found out that her daughter, Kathy, was my counselor at EFY my first year.

Here I am with a girl in my building...I don't remember her name.
Lisa Phillips went to the beauty college, and she was hilarious. Lori Nelson ended up marrying Lisa's older brother.
Christy Schafer by our Christmas tree.

On Halloween I made dinner in a pumpkin. I remember being surprised how amazing it tasted!
Here are most of us, in Utah for Lori's bridal shower. We tied a quilt that day, that's what I remember.

We really loved that Drew looked so much like Kramer on Seinfeld

Me and Bethany...(she was a little bit of a psycho...)
Christy--she was making some kind of frozen pie, and we thought it would be funny if she pretended to be eating a giant bowl of ice cream.

This is my Uncle David, my mom's brother. They lived pretty close, so sometimes we were able to get together with them. I really loved hanging out with David and Lisa!
Here I am in my apartment with Grandpa Stowell and Aunt Dorothy.
